10 Christmas Wreath Questions

When to put up a Christmas Wreath?

Timings vary depending on when the main decorations are being put up – with most saying their door wreath is in place about two weeks before Christmas Day. As with all things Christmas it's about personal preference and the traditions in your family.

How to hang your Christmas Wreath without damaging your door?

Measure your ribbon from the top of your door to the spot on the front of the door where you'd like your wreath to hang. Loop the ribbon through the wreath and tie it. Fold the end of your ribbon to cover the top of your door and secure with pin or staple and drop the wreath over front of the door so that it hangs at the perfect height.

What’s the origin of a Christmas Wreath?

The circular shape and the evergreen material make the wreath a representation of eternal life. It is also a representation of faith, as Christians in Europe often placed a candle on the wreath during Advent to symbolize the light that Jesus brought into the world.

How long will Christmas Wreaths last?

Fresh wreaths last between three and eight weeks, depending on the storage conditions. Refrigerated or outdoors in the cold, your wreath will last the longest. Indoors or outdoors in warm weather, your wreath will last the shortest.

Can Christmas Wreaths be recycled?

Fresh Christmas wreaths with dried cones and fruits can be composted completely, if the base of your wreath is made of natural straw. Make sure to take out any of the glass baubles from the wreath, they can be re used next year again. There are also wreaths made on a metal wire frame where you need the green off the frame before composting and you can store the frame for next year or possibly use it for the base of your Easter wreath.

Do Christmas Wreaths need water?

One of the most important steps in keeping a wreath lively and fragrant is preventing it from drying out. Spritzing the wreath with water every other day or so will help greatly, especially if you bring your wreath indoors and in warmer climates.

Why buy an Irish Christmas Wreath?

Most Irish florists use Irish grown foliage that is harvested from sustainable forests. As well as using Irish products for their wreaths the wreaths are also hand made in Ireland and this helps not only the local economy but also reduces the global impact on transport into Ireland.

What is the best foliage for Christmas Wreaths?

The most used foliage for your Christmas Wreath is the non shed foliage of the Nobilis fir, this soft and easy to handle foliage will last for a long time, Than you can add Holly, ivy, spiky evergreen yew or spruce, rosemary, pine box and privet and other softer evergreen foliage such as Eucalypthus also work well as fillers for creating the bulk of the wreath.

Who invented Christmas Wreaths?

The origin of Christmas wreaths dates back to the ancient times of the Persian Empire. During that time, wreaths were believed to be symbol of importance as well as success. They were much smaller in size than the present ones and were known as ‘diadems’.

Much later the Advent wreath was first used by Lutherans in Germany in the 16th century, and in 1839, Lutheran priest Johann Hinrich Wichern used a wreath made from a cart wheel to educate children about the meaning and purpose of Christmas, as well as to help them count its approach, thus giving rise to the modern version of the Christmas wreath.

How to make simple Christmas Wreaths at home?

You will need one wreath ring, can be straw base or metal ring, scissors, green twine, florist wire and moss, in addition to hardy and different textured foliage such as spruce, ivory, evergreen oak and buxus. Christmas decorations such as fir cones, dried oranges and cinnamon sticks look great and create a delicious festive aroma.

Start adding small bunches of green to your wreath base going around until the full ring is covered. Than add your decorations with florist wire or twine and finally hang your creation on your front door to welcome all your family and friends over the festive season.
